The Regional Nucleus of Amapá (NRAP) was created in 2008 through cooperation between the Federal University of Amapá (UNIFAP), the Institute of Scientific and Technological Research of the State of Amapá (IEPA) and the Chico Mendes Institute of Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). NRAP is based in Macapá, AP. Initially, a grid of 5km2 trails with 30 permanent plots was implemented in an area of forested land in the Amapá National Forest in the center of the State. The plots are 250m in length and follow the contour of the terrain (isocline), so that the ground conditions and water table depth remain relatively constant.
During 2015 and 2016 a module with two 5 km parallel trails interconnected by two 1 km trails and 10 permanent plots was installed in a cerrado area near Macapá, in Quilombo Mel da Pedreira, in the Environmental Protection Area of Rio Curiaú. The NRAP group is implementing an irregular virtual grid with 30 plots covering an extensive area of cerrado and gallery forests in the southeastern portion of the state. NRAP has developed research to uncover patterns of forest structure, quantification of biomass in relation to different environmental and ecological gradients, environmental services, conservation policies, process analyzes and species distribution at local and regional scales. This information can be used as a basis to provide technical and scientific information when planning for the use and conservation of biodiversity and the maintenance of ecosystem services in the region.
