The Presidente Figueiredo region occupies a unique biogeographical position, situated at the interface between the Guiana Shield and the upland ecosystems of Amazonia. This transitional zone harbours an exceptional mosaic of habitats, where species from different ecoregions overlap, interact, and respond sensitively to environmental and climatic variation.
The study of biodiversity in this region allows us to understand ecological dynamics that do not manifest in the same way in lowland forests, making Presidente Figueiredo a strategically important natural laboratory for understanding patterns of species distribution, ecological resilience, and conservation strategies at an Amazonian scale.
In this context, a RAPELD module comprising five sampling plots was established in 2022 during a field course run by the Graduate Programme in Ecology at INPA, during which point-based sampling of selected taxonomic groups was carried out. After this period, the plots fell into disuse until 2025, when the module was revitalised with financial support from CNPq and FAPEAM through the projects CENBAM (INCT Call – CNPq No. 58/2022, process no.: 406474/2022-2), IARAA (NOTICE No. 007/2025 – PAPB-CT&I/FAPEAM, process no.: 01.02.016301.02571/2025-89), and CAPACREAM (CNPq/MCTI/FNDCT Call No. 19/2024, process no.: 444350/2024-1), now comprising ten uniformly distributed plots.

The module area is located within a well-preserved terra firme forest, owned and managed by the ecotourism company AmazonEmotions, the creator of the Amazon Nexus initiative. Operating from this strategic base, Amazon Nexus functions as a living laboratory and hub for innovation, where scientific research, conservation, ecotourism, and the arts are brought together.
The initiative evaluates and selects sites across different regions of Amazonia with high natural and tourism potential, with the aim of replicating this model and establishing new research stations, conservation programmes, and carefully designed visitor itineraries, in collaboration with CENBAM.
