PELD refers to the Brazilian Long-Term Ecological Research Program (Programa de Pesquisas Ecológicas de Longa Duração). Similar to the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) programs found in many countries, PELD aims to monitor and study ecosystems over long periods of time to understand their dynamics, interactions, and responses to environmental changes. PELD sites are established across Brazil to investigate various ecosystems, including forests, grasslands, rivers, and coastal areas, providing valuable data for ecological research and conservation efforts.

The general objective of the project is to understand ecosystemic processes, biological interactions and human impacts on biodiversity in the southwestern Amazon region. Its specific objectives are:
