Who we are
Cuniã-Jacundá Integrated Management (GICJ) is the management proposal for three Federal Conservation Units, located in the state of Rondônia. These are: Cuniã Ecological Station (ESEC Cuniã), Jacundá National Forest (FLONA Jacundá) and Cuniã Lake Extractivist Reserve (RESUN Cuniã) (Read more about these CUs below). These conservation units are managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), an agency linked to the Ministry of the Environment.
GICJ emerged in 2005 through the initiative of local managers, with the initial objective of enabling the development of activities common to the three UC's. However, with the development of joint work, it was found that integrated management not only enabled the union of human and financial resources, but also avoided repetitive institutional actions, favored the consolidation and effectiveness of the UCs involved and improved their interface with Communities and institutions working in the region.
The area of the units that make up the GICJ is of relevant ecological importance, since it is an environment rich in lakes and floodplains formed by the Madeira River and its tributaries, besides being a region that works like nurseries of species of the avifauna and ichthyofauna, and to promote The protection of a significant part of the Amazonian biome and of transition spots with the cerrado and natural fields, totaling a total area of 408 thousand hectares.
The social importance of these CUs lies especially in the protection of the riverside culture and way of life and the search for the construction of a model of sustainable occupation and planned for the management of natural resources.
Future vision
To be a reference for a mosaic of consolidated conservation units and a public management model that, based on the excellence of its team, is capable of guaranteeing the protection of biodiversity, the generation of knowledge and the promotion of the sustainable use of natural resources, allied To the commitment and responsibility of the communities involved.
Extractive Reserve of Cuniã Lake
The Extractive Reserve is a type of conservation unit of sustainable use, which has traditional extractive populations living in its interior. Its basic objectives are to protect the livelihoods and culture of these populations and to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources. Resex Cuniã, created by Federal Decree 3238 of November 10, 1999, is located in the municipality of Porto Velho, in Rondônia, at an approximate distance of 130 km from the urban center, with access through the Igarapé Cuniã, a tributary of the Madeira River. Its total area is 55,850.00 hectares, which is formed by exuberant lacustrine and fluvial landscapes, sheltering diverse bird species, aquatic fauna and flora. Access to the conservation unit is carried out exclusively by river, through the Madeira and igunapé Cuniã rivers. The resident population is composed of about 110 families distributed in the Neves, Araçá, Pupunhas and Silva Lopes Araújo nuclei, which is a descendant of the Moorish Indians and Northeastern immigrants of the old rubber plantations. Its main source of funds is the fishing and the production of cassava flour complemented by the collection of some of the products offered by the forest, such as Brazilian catanha, açaí, cupuaçu and piquiá.
National Forest of Jacundá
The National Forest is a type of conservation unit of sustainable use, whose objective is to reconcile nature conservation with the multiple and sustainable use of a portion of its natural resources and scientific research. The use of its resources must be in accordance with the Management Plan of the unit, thus guaranteeing the protection of water resources, of the soils and scenic beauties, in addition to the sustainable use of biodiversity. Flona Jacundá, created by decree dated December 1, 2004, is located on the right bank of the Madeira River, encompassing part of the Glebas Jacundá and Rio Preto in the municipalities of Porto Velho and Candeias do Jamari. Its total area is 226,644.52 hectares. The only land access is through the BR-364 to the Samuel hydroelectric plant and then through Line 45 that passes through the area proposed by INCRA to create the Jequitibá PDS. The access is also given by the Madeira, Rio Preto and Jacundá rivers.
