Book Summary:
The book reveals new information about the fish populations from a previously unstudied region, the Cunia Ecological Station (Portuguese: Estação Ecológica(ESEC) de Cuniã). This is a strictly protected ecological station in the states of Amazonas and Rondônia where only scientific research and educational visits can take place.
ESEC Cuniã has several streams that drain the rainforest and savannah where icitiofauna is heavily dependent on allochthonous organic material of marginal vegetation. Of the more than 800 species recorded in the book Rio Madeira Fish (Queiroz et al., 2013), only 13 occur only in the streams of ESEC Cuniã.
This catalog brings together the results of research on the small fish fauna of the watercourses of the ESEC of Cuniã, and features photos, identification keys, and ecological information about the most abundant species.
The book is an important contribution to science and the knowledge of the diversity of fish in the area. Furthermore, it should be an important tool for biodiversity conservation, facilitating future studies of these species and serving as a guide to ichthyologists and other professionals working in protected areas.
