Pirizal (Northern Pantanal)

In the mid-1990s, a group of UFMT ecology researchers joined researchers at the Max Planck Institute to develop the Ecology of the Great Pantanal (PEP) project, which was included in the SHIFT Program (Studies of Human Impacts in Forest And Floodpalins in the Tropics). This initial group chose several locations for their studies: among them the current location of the Pirizal grid, in the municipality of Nossa Senhora do Livramento, near Poconé. This effort in the area of ​​the current grid has intensified since 1997 with the construction of a house to welcome students and researchers. This house currently continues to welcome researchers who use the grid. In 2001, with the termination of the PEP, the group of researchers that participated in this one founded the Ecological Studies Center of the Pantanal Mato-grossense - NEEPA, which has been working in the area ever since. Pre-grid scientific production can also be found on these sites.
 
The Pirizal sampling site is a standard RAPELD grid (25 km2). Data of this type are the most complete and useful for long-term monitoring and geographical comparisons and are suitable for most analyzes. We suggest that grid monitoring studies use the methods described in the metadata from previous PPBio studies, or include a calibration phase within the project to ensure that data can be comparable.

Funding Support
 
In 2004, the Postgraduate Program in Ecology and Conservation of Biodiversity of UFMT - PPGECB, whose teachers are mostly members of NEEPA, formulated and approved at CNPq the project Strategic Planning for Consolidation of the Research Group of the Graduate Program Course Master's Degree in Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation (UFMT / INPA). This project aims to use the experience of INPA's ecology program to strengthen PPGECB. Construction of the grid began in October 2005 and was completed in December 2005. The CNPq (through the PADCT program) and FAPEMAT financed this construction. The Pirizal grid was built in the municipality of Nossa Senhora do Livramento, in an area belonging to 3 pantanal ranchers who are supporting this action.
 
At the beginning of March 2006 there were 5 PPGECB teaching researchers involved with research in this grid. At the end of 2006, 10 researchers are expected to participate. The research works in this grid are or will be financed by CNPq, FAPEMAT and the Pantanal Research Center - CPP.
 
In addition to this grid in the Pantanal, 14 plots were installed in the plateau region of Chapada dos Guimarães, where a research project is being developed by a professor at PPGECB.
These facilities are already an extension to the Pantanal region of the PPBio, where Cuiabá is configured as a regional nucleus of this Program.
