VII CENBAM & PPBio Western Amazon Symposium

October 6-10, 2025

INPA, Manaus, Brazil

The Annual Meeting – VII CENBAM & PPBio Western Amazon Symposium was held from October 6-10, 2025, in the Graduate Program auditorium of the Ecology Course at the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA). This event brought together members from various networks and projects, including INCTs, PPBios, PELDs, and other initiatives, along with representatives from CNPq, MCTI, FAPEAM, and INPA. The objective was to gather researchers affiliated with these projects to present research developments, address and overcome structural challenges, and expand the impact of science on conservation, sustainable development, and Amazon sovereignty.

Days 1-2 Internal PPBio Meetings

The first and second days were dedicated to internal meetings for the PPBio Ecosystems and PPBio Inventories projects. Topics discussed included financial balance of both projects, review of data sampling spreadsheets and PPBio products, planning for 2026 activities, and brief presentations by Regional Nucleus coordinators (activities performed, pending demands according to planning, ongoing or completed products). Additionally, there was a presentation on PPBio communications by Ecdysis Ecodesign, represented by Dr. Igor Yuri Fernandes, showcasing PPBio's new visual identity and monthly bulletins. On the second day morning, PPBio data management was presented, discussing PPBio Nacional's data policy, presentation and review of PPBio AmOc's commitment term, the PPBio AmOc-SiBBr partnership, and data management strategies in SiBBr and DataOne. In the afternoon, Network Governance was discussed, including brainstorming sessions on important points for PPBio AmOc network governance and data/authorship policy, creation of working groups to finalize governance documents and PPBio AmOc data policy, and perspectives for future funding.

Day 3 Official Opening & Project Presentations

The official opening of the VII CENBAM & PPBio AmOc Symposium featured representatives from INPA (Dr. José Laurindo Campos dos Santos), MCTI (Dr. Bruno Martinelli, coordinator of programs and projects for ecosystem services), CNPq (Dr. Fabíola Lacerda, coordinator of Research Programs in Ecology and Biodiversity), and FAPEAM (Simone Eneida Baçal de Oliveira, Presidential Advisor). Presentations included: networks history, RAPELD and CENBAM by Dr. William Ernest Magnusson (INCT-CENBAM/INPA coordinator); PPBio Western Amazon – Ecosystem Processes and Inventories by Dr. Domingos de Jesus Rodrigues (UFMT) and Dr. Clarissa Rosa (INPA); PPBio Eastern Amazon by Dr. Rogério Silva (MPEG) and Dr. Claudia Quintino (UFMA); CAPACREAM project by Dr. José Julio Toledo (UNIFAP); Amazon Microbiome project by Dr. Gilvan Silva (Embrapa Western Amazon); National Pantanal Research Institute by Dr. Leandro Dênis Battirola (INPP Director); Tumucumaque Program by Dr. Jarine Reis (Imazon); IARAA project by MSc. Ricardo Ruaro (INPA); and "Integrating knowledge: environmental monitoring and social research in the Amazon" by MSc. Rayssa Guinato (IDSM).

Day 4 Project Presentations & Integration Workshops

Morning presentations included: PPBio Eastern Amazon (Dr. Leandro Juen/Dr. Filipe França/Dr. Grazielle Sales, UFPA); INCT SinBiAm (Dr. Leandro Juen/Dr. Filipe França, UFPA; Dr. Fabrício Baccaro, UFAM; Dr. Juliana Schietti, INPA); and various PELD projects (POPA, ECOA, FORR, AMOR, PSAM, IAFA). Poster presentations from students and researchers affiliated with INCT-CENBAM and PPBio AmOc were also displayed. In the afternoon, participants were divided into five Working Groups: (1) Biological inventories and monitoring, (2) Ecosystem processes and abiotic variables, (3) Ecological synthesis, (4) Communication (internal communication, dissemination and science popularization), and (5) Society (integrating biodiversity data with socioeconomic and demographic data). Groups discussed topics for 30 minutes following a structured methodology with rotating participants over four rounds, while rapporteurs remained fixed.

Day 5 Integration Workshop & Closing

The final day featured an integration workshop where Working Group rapporteurs presented discussion results from each theme. These discussions resulted in a comprehensive document containing all decisions made during the symposium, available in the CENBAM Letter.
