D1.2 Summary report and strategy recommendations for EU citizen science gateway for biodiversity data

The report reviews biodiversity related citizen science initiatives in Europe, specifically the data
mobilization aspect and gives an overview of citizen-science related activities in the project EU BON,
the European Biodiversity Observation Network. In addition, recommendations for a pan-European
citizen science gateway and data mobilization efforts will be given, with the aim of filling in existing
biodiversity data gaps.

The project is called Steller Watch. The idea is to convince the public to comb through pictures looking for sea lions.

Biodiversity needs citizen scientists. Citizen scientists are already providing large amounts of data for monitoring biodiversity, but they could do much more, according to a new study published in the journal Biological Conservation, which suggests that citizen science has the potential to contribute much more to regional and global assessments of biodiversity. Citizen scientists are regular people who provide data or input to science, for example by monitoring species in their community or examining satellite imagery for evidence of deforestation or land use change.

Citizen scientists and natural spaces play key roles in preserving biodiversity, according to famed biologist E.O. Wilson and a panel of other experts at a 19 May event jointly hosted by the National Park Service and AAAS in celebration of America’s national parks.
